Youth – Girl Guides and gender

May 2017

Inclusive policies at the Girlguiding association have caused concern among parents that men will abuse the organisation’s diversity policy and put young girls at risk.

The Christian Institute’s Head of Communications, Ciarán Kelly, said he was concerned that the Girlguiding’s new equality and diversity policy, which will allow men who identify as women to become Girl Guide leaders, could put children at risk without proper checks being carried out.

In a video on the Christian Institute website, he commented: ‘Any man who says he identifies as a woman could become a Girl Guides leader, and that includes going away with young girls on residential trips. Anyone can see this will put off a lot of parents from sending their children to the Girl Guides and cause unnecessary concern for the children themselves’.
