The chapel building was packed on Saturday 5 November, as Downe Baptist Church gathered with many friends for the recognition service of Glenn Hanna as minister in training.
Mr Hanna is currently undertaking a theological training course with the Evangelical Movement of Wales and is to be appointed pastor at Downe upon its completion.
The meeting was chaired by William Gardner, who has acted as moderator at Downe for the past four years. Gordon Hoppé, an elder and church secretary, spoke of how the church had been led to invite Mr Hanna, who together with his wife Kathryn have been in membership with us for six years.
Mr Hanna, who had been a civil servant, responded by telling how God had led him from being a ‘servant of the crown’ to become a full-time ‘servant of the king’, as pastor at Downe Baptist Church.
A prayer of dedication was led by church member, William Smith, who was formerly pastor at New Cross. Geoff Gobbett brought God’s Word, from 2 Corinthians 4:1-6, ‘Since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart’, challenging both Mr Hanna and the church on the responsibility of serving in today’s world.
The service was followed by an informal tea in the village hall.
