Dr Larycia Hawkins, the professor who left an Illinois Christian college after asserting that Christians and Muslims worship the same God, has joined the University of Virginia.
Ms Hawkins had announced on her Facebook in December 2015 that she would wear a hijab in support of those American Muslims who were being harassed. However, because she also equated Christian and Islamic belief as fundamentally the same, Wheaton College said this represented a significant difference of ethos between her and the faculty. Evangelical Times first reported the story in February 2016.
She has now been named University of Virginia’s Abd el-Kader Visiting Faculty Fellow, which is named for the 19th-century Islamic scholar and leader. Ms Hawkins is to research relationships between religions and races.
