Politics – Sunday trading

March 2016

Day One Christian Ministries has called on Christians to lobby their MPs against government proposals for extending Sunday trading hours. The plans, which have been criticised by Christian groups and trade union bodies, would give powers to local councils to extend opening hours.

The proposals have been put forward as amendments to the Enterprise Bill by Business Secretary Sajid Javid, just three months after Prime Minister David Cameron was pressurised to withdraw a vote on Sunday trading laws, when 20 Conservative MPs, backed by Scottish National Party members, threatened to vote against the government.

In a statement, Day One said: ‘Even though MPs and some retailers have disapproved of these new proposals, Mr Javid has pressed ahead, determined to get these new measures through Parliament’.
