Mission – New pregnancy advice centre

December 2015 | by Melody Bidwell

Abortion is often considered a topic best left alone, little questioned and almost a taboo subject in today’s society. However, we cannot deny that approximately 200,000 babies are aborted each year in England and Wales.

This highlights the great need for practical, Christian, pro-life ministry in the UK. Therefore, we are seeking to establish a Christian Crisis Pregnancy Advice Centre (CPAC) in Sheffield, which will enable us as Christians to help mothers and the unborn directly.

Having studied the sad reality of Britain’s abortion rate, we feel the need is greater than anticipated for this work. According to the government’s abortion statistics in England and Wales, last year, 185,331 babies were aborted in the UK.

Since its legalisation under the 1967 Abortion Act, on average, around one fifth of all pregnancies in the UK have ended in an abortion. In fact, one in three women in the UK have an abortion in their lifetime. We should also note that women between 20 and 24 years old are the largest users of abortion services and almost 90 per cent of abortions take place in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

We firmly believe that Christ commands us to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Our aim is to help these unborn babies by encouraging their mothers to choose life.

Furthermore, we are here to offer support to both expectant mothers and the little ones they carry in their wombs. Our goal is to meet the needs of these women by offering two specific services.

First, we hope to train a group of counsellors for the CPAC, who could offer professional counselling from a Christian worldview. For women facing the uncertainty of an unexpected pregnancy, informed, yet loving and compassionate counsel is invaluable.

Secondwe hope to raise sufficient funds to purchase an ultrasound machine. This would allow mothers to see their child ‘face-to-face’ in the womb. This has proved significantly effective in pregnancy crisis centres elsewhere. We hope that this will be used by God to help women choose life.

We value support for this work in various ways nonetheless. There are opportunities available, whether as a centre manager to oversee day-to-day operations, or volunteers willing to be trained as counsellors. We will provide the training and support needed to effectively and lovingly counsel mothers, as they wrestle through these important decisions.

We would welcome any comments or questions you might have and would love the opportunity to share further about our hopes for CPAC. We hosted a fund-raising dinner on Saturday 17 October 2015.  This provided an excellent opportunity to hear more about the future work, with special guest speakers from the US, Lance and Sonja Cooper, who offered informative and touching insights in an unforgettable evening.

We value prayer and financial support. If this work interests you, or if you have a desire to help the unborn, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected]
