Christians appeared to have been targeted in an Oregon college shooting carried out by Chris Harper-Mercer in October.
According to a report in The Daily Mail, one teenager, Anastasia Boylan, was in a classroom on her fourth day studying at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg when Harper-Mercer entered and shot her professor dead point-blank.
She was shot in her spine, but survived by playing dead. Her family told reporters, ‘He told his victims to stand up and declare their religion, before telling them, “Good, because you’re a Christian, you’re going to see God in just about one second”.’
He then shot them. Altogether the depraved gunman killed nine people at the Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, including the professor.
Another teacher, on hearing the shots, told reporters that she recognised the sound of gunfire and ran down the corridors, knocking on classroom doors and telling everyone to get out.
One former serviceman, 30-year-old Chris Mintz, was studying at the college. Having been a serviceman for seven years, he attempted to tackle Harper-Mercer, getting shot seven times in the process. He is recovering in hospital. Harper-Mercer was later reported shot dead on the campus by police officers.
While people gathered for candlelit vigils, the gun debate has flared up once again in the US senate, with many calling for more gun-free zones and even for a complete repeal of the Second Amendment, which gives Americans the right to bear arms.
