UK Persecution: Ashers Baking Company

June 2015

Ashers Baking CompanyA judge has ruled against Ashers Baking Company, after it was taken to court in March for declining to decorate a pro-gay marriage campaign cake. On 19 May, Judge Isobel Brownlie ruled in favour of the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland, which claimed that the McArthur family, who own and run Ashers, broke political and sexual orientation discrimination laws. Daniel McArthur responded to the judgement, saying, ‘We certainly don’t think we’ve done anything wrong and we will be taking legal advice to consider our options for appeal’. The Christian Institute, who have been supporting Ashers, comments: ‘This decision represents a serious blow for free speech and plunges the law into confusion’ (further comment in next month’s ET).
