A missionary nurse from WEC International has been shot and wounded, just a few days after receiving an OBE for her lifelong service.
According to reports, 75-year-old Maud Kells, from Cookstown, County Tyrone, was shot twice in the shoulder by rebels at her home in Mulita, in the north east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Ms Kells has served in the DRC since 1968, working initially as a missionary nurse, as well as being involved in the training of Congolese nurses in five hospitals and 30 health centres. She also engages in Bible school teaching, supervision of construction projects and speaking at church services.
Quoted by the BBC, Ulster Unionist assembly member for Mid-Ulster Sandra Overend said she was shocked to hear of the shooting. She said, ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with Maud as she recovers’.
