There is still confusion concerning Meriam Ibrahim, the Sudanese Christian woman sentenced to 100 lashes for adultery and to death for apostasy, as to whether she shall be freed, after immense international pressure.
Speaking on behalf of the government in Khartoum, Abdullahi Alzareg told the BBC that the punishment would not be carried out. But, at the time of writing, the 27-year-old woman is still in prison, after giving birth to a baby girl while her legs were shackled.
Meriam has refused to recant her Christian beliefs. It is understood that her mother is a Christian and had been separated from her father, who was Muslim.
Meriam had married a Christian man, Daniel, and already has a young son with him. However, according to the Telegraph, her husband and lawyers are sceptical that she will be released with no further repercussions.
US officials confirmed that her husband is a US citizen, but in order to confer US citizenship on the children, Daniel will have to provide DNA proof that he is the father of her two children.
