A New York satanic group has petitioned the Oklahoma state capital to display a seven-foot tall carved image of Satan.
According to a report from US news channel CBS, the Satanic Temple unveiled their depiction of the devil as the idol Baphomet, of whose worship the Knights Templars were unjustly accused during the Middle Ages.
The news report said the idol would be placed at the Oklahoma state capital, Oklahoma City, where a Ten Commandments monument was placed in 2012, if the panel that oversees the grounds allows it.
Lucien Greaves, spokesman for the Temple, said in a statement that, ‘The monument has been designed to reflect the views of Satanists in Oklahoma City and beyond. The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair, where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation’.
According to the report, the Satanic Temple maintains that the Oklahoma legislature’s decision to authorise a privately-funded Ten Commandments monument at the north steps of the building opened the door for its own statue to be placed there.
A response from the Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission stated that it had placed a moratorium on considering any new requests.
