Some 170 young people attended a youth event on Friday night, 20 September, at Durham Cathedral in celebration of the Lindisfarne Gospels.
The event, organised by local youth workers, included worship, activities in the cathedral ranging from a laser light-fuelled Christian party, poetry, graffiti, drama, art and prayer to a candlelit compline service (the final service of the day) in the Galilee Chapel.
Called ‘The Word’, the event grew out of a collaboration that started when youth workers in Durham City started to meet together two years ago. The initiative involves youth workers and clergy from various churches, as well as Durham Youth for Christ and Shildon Youth Partnership.
The team has also worked with Christian Aid, Scripture Union, Tearfund and some local schools. The group meets every six weeks and has organised a series of events bringing together young people from different churches.
