Basketball player’s winning move

August 2013

An American league basketball player has turned a career-ending injury into a business venture offering pain relief for others.

Forced through debilitating pain to retire from the game, National Basketball Association (NBA) multi-millionaire Jonathan Bender, 32, realised that God was calling him in a different direction. He worked with scientists and engineers to develop a rehabilitative product to address joint pain and physical limitation problems.

The JB Intensive Trainer relieves joint pressure by acting as an ‘external hamstring’, while also allowing for constant resistance for rehab on-the-go.

Using the trainer himself, Bender, originally from Mississippi, became fit enough to re-enter the NBA, where he played for another year. Team doctors said he had the strongest lower extremities on the team.

However, Bender felt he was being called to help other people and retired three years ago to further develop and market his product, which is now sold in retail outlets in America.

He also established a non-profit foundation, which aims to empower children in his community by providing them with the tools to obtain life skills.

His work ethic and faith in God have been his guiding force. He said, ‘Faith is everything. It doesn’t matter what your plan is or what your talents are, you can’t do it without faith. The bigger the plan, the more faith you need. When we have to endure setbacks and failures, God is helping us not hurting us.

‘He’s preparing us to go to the next level in our lives. We must have faith over fear, and God reassures us of this in Proverbs 3:25-26 when he says, “Do not be afraid of sudden terror, nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes; for the Lord will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught’’.’
