At least 50 Christians have been arrested over the past 30 days in the Eritrean capital Asmara, Release International has claimed.
Reports from the advocacy group’s partners claim that 30 arrests were made on January 20, at a worship meeting of the Philadelphia church, in a private home in the district of Mai Temenai.
Among the detainees was an 85-year-old woman, who was also accused of hosting Bible study groups in her home. Release Eritrea says the raid was well planned and targeted Bible study leaders.
It is believed many of those who have been arrested were church leaders and all 50 detainees are being held in the notorious Karchele security prison in Asmara.
Release has called on the Christian community worldwide to pray for their immediate release, and that God will sustain and strengthen them, and build their faith through this ordeal.
