Nearly 50 people have been declared dead after Cyclone Thane lashed India’s south-eastern coast. Rain and gale-force winds of up to 125 kilometres an hour, accompanied by tidal surges of up to 1.5m, hit Tamil Nadu state, causing extensive damage and forcing coastal villagers to move to relief shelters.
A report in The Times revealed that although there had been some time to prepare, the damage was extensive. Major roads were blocked by uprooted trees and debris was dumped by the cyclone in Cuddalore and Puducherry. Relief operations worked round the clock to restore power to the affected areas. Many of those killed were women and children.
