Sri Lanka floods

Torrential rain caused severe flooding across Sri Lanka during December, killing 24 and affecting 524,000, with Christian families among the worst hit.

Homes set up for survivors of the tsunami were struck, as Mutur, Batticaloa, Vavuniya and the hill country around Neware Ellya were badly affected by floods and landslides.

Relief efforts were hampered as the island experienced unprecedented levels of rain during December, leaving a huge task for those involved in the clean-up operation.

Lanka Evangelical Fellowship of Churches commenced an emergency response by distributing cooked meals to more than 400 Christian families who asked for help.

Each food packet lasted for at least three days, providing a simple meal of rice and one curry. These families are in this position because they are day workers in the fields and the floods have stopped all work and travel.

Many roads are still under water, causing closure of schools and affecting the administration of government departments. Public transport has also been affected as roads are submerged under water.
