The pill

The Government’s latest campaign – ‘Contraception: worth talking about’ – encourages young women to choose contraception such as ‘the pill’ to avoid unwanted pregnancies and abortions.

But this campaign now has an unlikely detractor in the form of the Ecologist, which reports that the pill has been found to alter the oestrogen hormones in females and create males that are increasingly feminine.

After 15 years of studying fish in the UK and North America, scientists have discovered that rising levels of oestrogen-like and hormone-disruptive chemicals in water have feminised fish and caused disruption to their reproductive behaviours.

The research suggests that chemical disruptors found in the pill could have a similar effect on women, with imbalances being passed on to their offspring that even cause the feminising of male humans.
