Ebenezer, Bangor, 40th anniversary

It was in October 1969 that two small groups of believers, several of them students from the University of Wales, Bangor, began to meet for Bible study and prayer, because they could not find a truly evangelical church in the city.

Almost immediately, these two groups joined forces and soon felt the Lord was leading them to establish a regular witness in the locality. Mostly in their early 20s, the founders worked their way through the Westminster Confession of Faith, ironing out their theological differences and finally adopting it as the confessional basis of their meetings.

Under the Lord’s direction, they formed themselves into a properly constituted fellowship and when Ebenezer Chapel, a vacant Welsh Congregational church building, appeared on the market, they made an offer for it (with no money in hand) of £4,000. This was the test that the Lord was with them and within fourteen weeks, in amounts ranging from £1 to £200, the entire sum was raised.

So, in 1970 the chapel building became their property. By 1975, Rev. Dr Eryl Davies was pastor of Ebenezer Evangelical Church (Eglwys Efengylaidd Ebenezer) and under his faithful ministry and that of Revs Geraint Morgan (1986-1995) and David Finnie (1997-present), God has graciously maintained a gospel witness. The church celebrates its 40th anniversary on this coming 19-20 September. Please join with us on this important occasion. ‘Thus far has the Lord helped us’.
