Council prayers

A UK town council is under threat of legal action, after one of its councillors complained about prayers traditionally held before its meetings.

The Christian Institute (CI) revealed that Green Party councillor Enda Farrell called for the prayers at Kendal’s town council meetings to be scrapped or held in a different room.

Jumping on the political correctness bandwagon, he said this was a matter of equality: ‘This council has to be seen to be acceptant of all people regardless of creed, colour or race’. Farrell claimed that some councillors could feel excluded by the prayers.

Other councillors disagreed with his sentiments. The CI said this was not the first time prayers before such meetings have caused controversy. Last year, Bideford Town Council in Devon was advised that such prayers should be stopped in case the public felt their human rights had been infringed.
