The Spirit of the Puritans Conference
On Saturday 7 February over 200 people descended upon Whiteabbey Congregational Church for the second Northern Ireland Reformed Bible Conference. The speakers were Professor Edward Donnelly and Pastor Geoff Thomas.
Geoff Thomas opened with a paper on ‘The Puritans and the human condition’. This was a well-illustrated, moving presentation of the doctrine of sin and total depravity of mankind.
In the second session Prof. Donnelly brought the first of a two-part sermon on revival from Psalm 85. The message was searching and challenging. Following lunch, Geoff Thomas gave a lively biographical sketch of Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones.
The closing sermon by Edward Donnelly, again on revival from Psalm 85, ministered further on this relevant theme for our nation and day. The united psalm-singing at the commencement of each session brought a sense of the presence and worship of our great God.
People left the conference with a sense of joy and anticipation for next year’s conference, when we expect as speakers Dr Joel R. Beeke from Grand Rapids, USA, and Dr Joseph Pipa from Greenville Seminary, USA. This will be on Saturday 13 February in Lisburn Congregational Church (kindly granted).
