Papal T-shirt

The Scottish Premier League (SPL) is considering disciplinary action again Celtic Football Club following an incident when Celtic’s goalkeeper Artur Boruc displayed a ‘God bless the Pope’ T-shirt on the pitch.

Boruc revealed the shirt, with its image of the late Pope John-Paul II, after his side beat Glasgow rivals Rangers 3-2 in a closely run race for the Scottish Premiership title.

Under FIFA rules, players must not reveal undershirts that contain slogans or advertising; and the SPL could censure Celtic if the action was deemed to have caused fan problems.

For many years religious undercurrents have led to violence between supporters of the two clubs, and damaged the reputation of Scottish football at home and abroad.
