Outreach to deaf people

Two new groundbreaking titles have recently been published by Wakeman Trust to help evangelical churches reach out to deaf people.

It is estimated that there are 8.7 million people living in the UK who are deaf or hard of hearing: about 1 in 7 of the population. Over 50,000 people use British Sign Language (BSL).

Not Hearers Only is a manual designed to help church leaders and members understand the needs of deaf adults and children, and to reach out to them effectively. It contains much practical help and information, drawing on the author’s experience of founding a work for deaf people.

This is the first book of its kind by an evangelical Christian and has been widely welcomed by deaf believers and Christians working with the deaf.

The second book, Signs of Life, is a pictorial dictionary for all who use British Sign Language in Protestant churches. It begins with ‘Abraham, abstain, adoration, advocate, almighty…’ – providing a reference guide for interpreters and all who wish to share the gospel with deaf people.

The author, Andrew Owen, is leader of the Metropolitan Tabernacle’s Deaf Bible Fellowship and can be seen interpreting Tabernacle sermons on Sky 766.
