Covenanting times

A series of lectures about the Covenanters have been organised by Sixmilewater Cultural Society (Ballyclare, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland) in Ballyrobert Orange Hall. The lectures commenced on Thursday 28 February, with Robert Campbell (Ballygowan Free Presbyterian Church) giving a general overview of ‘The Covenanters’.

The second lecture took place on 11 March. On this occasion David Silversides (Loughbrickland Reformed Presbyterian Church) took the subject of ‘The Covenants and Covenanters’ and dealt with – the National Covenant; the Solemn League and Covenant; Covenanters in Ireland; and the Revolutionary Settlement.

The lectures continued on 8 April with Robert Campbell speaking about ‘The Foundations for the Covenants’. This dealt principally with the establishment of biblical Christianity in Scotland, the consolidation of the Reformed Faith and the development of the Presbyterian system under John Knox.

This series of lectures will conclude on Tuesday 29 April at 8pm with Rev. Silversides giving a character study on the life of Alexander Peden.

Although this period of history tends to be neglected, these lectures have engendered much interest. The society has been encouraged by the large attendance so far and would warmly welcome anyone who wishes to attend the final lecture.
