Thumbs down to super-casinos
The Christian Peoples Alliance (CPA) in Newham have welcomed the results of an opinion survey in the borough ( www.theadvisorycommission.com) which showed that residents are more than 2 to 1 against the government’s proposed large casino.
The BMG Research poll, which has just been published, showed that on average 56% of people are against a large casino in any form while only 25% are in favour. 64% are against a stand-alone casino while just 17% are in favour.
The survey, which comes on top of newspaper reports of Gordon Brown cancelling the Manchester super-casino, ‘is a huge nail in the coffin of a large casino for Newham’, said Cllr Alan Craig, leader of the Christian Peoples Alliance group on the council, who have been campaigning against the proposal.
The poll adds to the growing controversy surrounding the casino project. Reports of soaring costs of the Advisory Commission have surfaced this week, with the Commission’s expenses ballooning from the forecast £60,000 to over £100,000 and still growing.
