Reeth Bookshop

July 2004 | by Elizabeth Gregson

Faith Cook opened the Old Temperance Bookshop at Reeth over a year ago – and we’re still here! Thanks to our willing volunteer staff we continue to open four afternoons and one morning a week.

We have had customers from the USA, New Zealand and Australia. The latter was carrying an Evangelical Times advert for the bookshop and a letter from Jim Cromarty. One bed and breakfast guest exclaimed, ‘I can’t believe I’m having breakfast in a bookshop!’

We sell a broad range of stock, including Evangelical Times and cassettes. As well as woodcraft we now have a stock of scarves knitted in Cyprus while our ‘cards’ include framed Bible texts, some of them hand lettered.

As well as books from Evangelical Press, Day One, Christian Focus, Banner of Truth and Answers in Genesis, we now stock some from OMF, the Good Book Company and Belmont House Publishing. We have found the Evangelical Times book reviews and advertisements particularly helpful in keeping us up to date with new publications.

Our overall purpose is to promote awareness of the truth of God’s Word by making available material which will build up Christians in their faith. We long to meet those who are seeking God and to help them along the path towards a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

This is why we encourage visitors to sit down and chat over a hot drink or to browse through recent editions of Creation magazine. We are starting a video library and are encouraging local people to come in by using ‘Temperance Tokens’ and having a miniature kindergarten.

Please pray that we will have patience, sensitivity, and a willingness to move forward – with an increasing love for our Lord, for his people and for the lost.
