Science – Black holes

July 2017

Two huge black holes have merged, sending out a burst of gravitational waves, which essentially are warping space-time, according to reports.

The signals of the gravitational waves were picked up by the Advanced Ligo facilities in the USA, marking the third time that the labs’ laser instruments have been perturbed by the warping of space-time.

Speaking to the journal Physical Review Letters, David Shoemaker, spokesman for the Ligo Scientific Collaboration, said: ‘A new era in the investigation of the cosmos is now truly under way. The key thing to take away from this third, highly confident event is we are really moving from novelty to new observational science — a new astronomy of gravitational waves’.
