UK aid agencies have launched a joint fundraising appeal to help the hundreds of thousands of people fleeing their homes in Myanmar. According to the 13 Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) members, the people are in critical need of shelter, medical care, water and food.
Over the summer, more than half a million people, mostly Rohingya women and children, have sought refuge in Bangladesh from violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state.
However, Bangladesh, which is one of the poorest nations on earth, cannot sustain the numbers of people fleeing Myanmar.
According to a statement from the DEC, more than half of all new arrivals are children, and one in every ten people who arrive are pregnant or lactating mothers. The vast majority are living in makeshift shelters made from bamboo and thin plastic.
