Ethics – Sheffield pregnancy advice

August 2018 | by Kevin Bidwell

The Sheffield Pregnancy Advice Centre has seen great progress over the past six months, for which we are thankful, but we are being stretched as well.

1 Samuel 7:12 says, ‘Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen and called its name Ebenezer; for he said, “Till now the Lord has helped us”’. This text is a helpful reminder to look back on what the Lord has done.

Since November 2017, we have held pro-life information meetings in Sheffield, Kampala in Uganda, Barry in South Wales and Belfast in Northern Ireland, and in July we will have one in Newcastle.

These have helped inform the church about the legal argument for pro-life, as well as the biblical and medical arguments. It is vital for people to know this is a human rights issue in that an unborn baby has the right to life. In April this year, Maria Bidwell completed her training to be a sonographer, and she was able to work in the pregnancy advice centre in Marietta, Georgia, USA.

At the end of May, the Sheffield centre held an information and fund-raising dinner at a local hotel, with more than 50 people from around ten different churches. The guest speaker was Joe Fowler. He is a committed Christian lawyer and an elder in a PCA church in Douglasville, Georgia.

Sister centre

Following trials with the sister centre in Newcastle, we were able to negotiate an excellent deal to purchase two new Samsung ultrasound machines. Sheffield will pay for theirs separately to Newcastle, but joint buying power helps!

We feel like Psalm 126: ‘We were like those who dream’. Please pray for the number of hurdles to be overcome, so that we can begin to offer free ultrasound scans to pregnant women. Every week we receive phone calls to the centre from women with a crisis due to their pregnancy.

Sadly, some want a termination without advice, but at least they contact us. Of course, we do not offer terminations. Please pray for people to contact us to volunteer in the centre in a variety of ways during the next six months: reception, administration, marketing and church.

Also pray for the practical steps to register legally to offer free ultrasound scans, and all the associated work such as updating the website and so forth. Additionally, please pray for an additional ultrasound practitioner and a centre manager/director.
