International – Argentine Catholics in abortion row

October 2018

Pro-abortion protesters in Argentina have urged fellow citizens to quit the Catholic Church after it helped to defeat an attempt to liberalise abortion law in August.

According to the Associated Press, hundreds of people gathered in Buenos Aires to hand out forms that renounced their religious affiliation to the Catholic Church in protest against what they claimed was a religious interference in the political process.

This followed a vote in the Senate not to make abortion legal up to the age of 14 weeks. Currently, abortion is only allowed in the event of rape or extreme danger to the mother as a result of keeping the pregnancy.

The forms, which also call for the Church not to get involved in state affairs, will be given to the Episcopal Conference in the homeland of Pope Francis.
