Caroline Lucas MP, the former leader of the Green Party and a known champion of gay and transgender rights, has been branded ‘transphobic’ for agreeing to meet with a women’s group called Woman’s Place UK.
As reported by The Christian Institute, Ms Lucas had agreed to meet with the feminist group to hear their concerns over matters such as safe spaces for women.
Ironically, Ms Lucas had agreed to meet with Woman’s Place while responding to a transgender school teacher on Twitter, who encouraged Ms Lucas to speak with women and transsexuals about the ‘lack of confidence’ and ‘fear’ among feminist and trans groups.
But after confirming she planned to meet with the group, she was targeted online by trans activists, accused of ‘legitimising bigots’ and branded a ‘Terf’ — a Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist.
She was also added to Terfblocker — an online tool which ensures its users do not see anything posted by people deemed to hold transphobic views. Following this, former leadership hopeful and trans activist Aimee Challenor resigned from the party.
Writing for The Spectator, James Kirkup, noted the irony of Lucas being labelled a Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist (TERF). ‘Never mind that Lucas has been an outspoken advocate of trans rights in general, and of Aimee Challenor in particular.
‘Never mind that all she said she would do is meet some people and listen to them.’ He concluded, ‘So it’s official: Caroline Lucas, Green leader and champion of transgender rights, is a Terf whose words must not be heard.’
