MSPs vote to outlaw smacking

November 2019

Scotland has become the first country in the UK to criminalise parents who smack their own children. The ban on all physical punishment was backed by 84 votes to 29 in the Scottish Parliament.

The ban was opposed by the Scottish Conservatives, who said the bill was bad legislation that risks criminalising ‘good parents’ for using ‘reasonable chastisement’.

There are plans in the Welsh Assembly to ban smacking, but there are no proposals in England or Northern Ireland.
