Morningstar Wycliffe film in production

October 2020 | by John Tredgett

Production company Trinity Digital are continuing work on Morningstar, a documentary about 14th-century Bible translator John Wycliffe. The film combines interviews with historians as well as dramatic recreations of events from Wycliffe’s life.

Interviews have been recorded ahead of the dramatised scenes due to be shot next year. Location filming in key sites such as Lutterworth, Oxford, and London will also be used in the final cut.

The documentary is produced and directed by Murdo Macleod, a graduate of Digital Film and TV at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. In 2016, he produced the widely-acclaimed Knox, which also blended interviews, location shooting, and dramatisation to bring to life the Scottish reformer.

Murdo spoke of why he is keen to tell the stories of such men as Wycliffe: ‘He was a fascinating character who lived in fascinating times. He lived in a turbulent period and was often caught between the titanic forces of church and state.

‘Wycliffe struggled to maintain his integrity as his world was engulfed by the Black Death, the Papal Schism, and the Peasants’ Revolt. Fuelled by suppressed ambition, Wycliffe faced the deepest of questions. Why was the world the way it was? Why were ordinary folk living in thrall to kings and popes? Why was the church so different from Jesus Christ?

‘It was Wycliffe’s passionate new focus on the Bible that brought upon him the wrath of the bishops, but also inspired a revolution of faith in England’s farms and villages.’

Morningstar is due to be released towards the end of 2021 and further information is at morningstar.co.uk.
