This is the third in a series of books on the Psalms. Those who have read the previous two volumes will realise that Professor Davies is not a dry and dusty academic writing for fellow academics. His aim is not just to inform the mind, but to challenge and warm the hearts of his readers.

Of his considerable knowledge of his subject there is no doubt, nor of the amount of work that has been put into each volume. In the preface he describes writing these expositions as ‘slow, plodding, sweaty work’ (p.11). From the point of view of those reading, we are glad to reap the results of his labours.

This book is immensely readable and full of telling illustrations from wide sources, including family life and American history. The title is taken from Psalm 23:5, chosen because it reflects the theme in many of the Psalms from 25 to 37 which deal with conflict and hostility.

I heartily recommend this title. It is hard to see how Christians, both young and old, will fail to benefit from prayerfully reading it and applying the numerous lessons to their lives.

In Acts 14:22 we read of the Paul and Barnabas ‘strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God”’ (NKJV). For those who are feeling the heat of the battle, the purchase of this modestly priced book will do much under God to strengthen the souls of the saints today.
