Haiti

Jean-Claude Souillot, managing director of Evangelical Press Missionary Trust’s outreach to the French-speaking world, describes his latest visit to Haiti. The main goals of my visit were first to preach and teach the gospel in various places and second to see how I could best encourage the Christian bookshop in Port-au-Prince. In preparing for the visit, I also got in touch with as many Haitian students as possible who had been undertaking EP’s correspondence course for preachers. While in Haiti, I was able to meet many of these students, including those who had finished the course. Generally, the reception of the Word was good and...

New training initiative in West Africa

Recently, a group of Senegalese, Liberian and Ivorian pastors and Christian workers, whose hearts God had burdened to take his Word more effectively to fellow Africans, let it be known that they wanted help with this outreach. New Tribes Mission (NTM) is more than happy to be involved.      Some of the participants, both trainers and trainees, had come to trust Christ as Saviour through the ministry of NTM missionaries. They subsequently were discipled and are engaged in gospel and pastoral ministry.      As a result, an exciting project is now under way to give these mature believers cross-cultural training as church planters. The introductory...

Missionary Spotlight – French West Africa

French West Africa   I was recently in French West Africa. In Lomé, Togo, I had the joy of meeting Julien Naka, my Europresse (French EP Books) colleague. Paul N’Goran, from Ivory Coast, joined us the next day, along with Vincent Dua, a young preacher from his church. Vincent is quiet and shy – until he gets in the pulpit, opens the Bible and starts preaching. Then he is like a young lion for the Lord!   On Saturday, we preached at Lomé and found the people eager to learn about free grace. People continued asking searching questions for most of the afternoon. We spent...

MISSIONARY SPOTLIGHT-West Africa

An edited account of a journey undertaken by Bill Clark in French West Africa in August 1996. It depicts vividly the difficulties faced by missionaries travelling in that region. Bill went to be with the Lord in November 1998, but his work in Africa endures in the form of numerous independent Reformed churches and the literature and radio ministries described here. My journey to Africa did not begin well. We eventually arrived in the wrong country, Togo, where the airline arranged for us to stay in a hotel in Lomé. Next morning there was no bus to take us to Cotonou. I was due to...

MISSIONARY SPOTLIGHT-West Africa

Radio and literature in French West Africa At present, many French-speaking countries in Africa are at war or in a precarious state politically and economically. The Ivory Coast, for several years an area of ministry for Europresse-Afrique (a subsidiary of Evangelical Press), has become less stable politically and less secure as a market for Christian literature. Certainly, the Lord seems to be leading us to promote the gospel in other countries as well as Ivory Coast. But before we attempt to take books to distant places, we have been seeking further openings in countries near at hand, like Burkina Faso, Benin and Togo. Our visits...

Missionary Spotlight

Christian literature in French West Africa ‘Europresse-Afrique’ is an independent, indigenous organization based in Gagnoa, Ivory Coast. It is closely associated with ‘Europresse-France’, which is located in Chalon-sur-Saône, France. Both organizations were set up under EP Missionary, the missionary wing of Evangelical Press. Two men are employed full time in France, Jean-Claude Souillot and Marc Demory, and two in Ivory Coast, Paul N’Goran and Jean Katla. At the moment there are close to eighty Europresse titles available, comprising Reformed Christian books and booklets in French. These are distributed throughout the French-speaking world. Concerning the work in West Africa Paul N’Goran makes the following observations. Although...

Gospel radio in the French-speaking world The growth in understanding of the gospel of grace, which is happening today in many parts of French-speaking Africa, is undoubtedly due to the influence of Bill Clark’s radio programme Echos de la Vérité. For a number of years this was broadcast over Radio ELWA in Monrovia, Liberia, but this station was unfortunately destroyed during the civil war in that country. However, many African countries are now following the lead of European countries in licensing private local radio stations. As a result, Echos de la Vérité can still be heard in some parts of French-speaking Africa. The programme is...
