Missionary Spotlight – A miracle of grace in Cubao, Philippines

A miracle of grace in Cubao, Philippines   One afternoon five young men armed with knives robbed a Jeepney in Cubao. It wasn’t the first time, but for at least two of them it was to be the last. The robbery went badly wrong for them when police warning shouts and bullets arrived at the same time.      Shortly after, two men lay dead in the street. Joseph fled the scene but ended up in hospital with a wounded foot. Some years later, and a few hundred metres from where the robbery took place, Joseph limps down the aisle of our church building to give...

Missionary Spotlight – Ministering to the poor in Cubao, Philippines

Ministering to the poor in Cubao, Philippines   It’s Thursday night again and time for the Drop-in Centre. It’s strange remembering back to when we started more than five years ago.   Tonight I’m on the gate checking who comes in and whether they are allowed to attend. Plenty of people from the slums, especially children, would be glad of a free meal, but the aim of this meeting is clear – it’s for those who are sleeping rough.      Numbers have dropped recently, with the average weekly attendance down to around 90. Standing at the gate means I get to talk to everyone. As...

Missionary Spotlight – Bringing families to Christ

Bringing families to Christ   In addition to daily social and educational work, Christian Compassion Ministries also holds several Bible-based evangelistic camps each year. The camps are tailored to specific groups, such as those on the Educational Assistance Programme (EAP) or those living on the street.   EAP camps   Last April, the ninth EAP camp was held at Crystal Beach, Zambales. This was the first joint camp for couples and teens and the main theme was on strengthening family relationships.      Around 150 campers attended the three-day camp and each sponsored child came with their parents or parent. Most families were from slum areas,...

Missionary Spotlight – Meet a student

Meet a student   Cyrell Corong is 17 and in her second year of college, studying information technology. CCM has sponsored her for the past six years.        Cyrell says: ‘I have three sisters and two brothers. My father is a construction worker and was not earning enough for all of us to go to school. College is even more expensive and I would never have been able to go if it were not for CCM’s support.      ‘I am studying for a professional licence as I would eventually like to be a programmer and create systems. Sometimes it is hard to study at...

Missionary Spotlight – Compassion for the Philippines

Compassion for the Philippines   http://www.ccmmanila.org/ Christian Compassion Ministries (CCM) is a Bible-based ministry of Cubao Reformed Baptist Church (CRBC). The mission was founded in 1995 as the church became aware of four or five street families living under makeshift roofs and the appalling poverty of local street children.      CRBC was given a sum of money to help the poor and, after much prayer, the church was directed by God to provide a home for street girls. The first children’s home was opened in 1995, followed by a home for boys.      The work has grown exponentially, not just in terms of the number...

Missionary Spotlight – Visit in Manila

Visit in Manila   Sarah Platt visited Manila in December 2007 to work alongside CCM for four weeks.   Q: What were your first impressions of the Philippines?   A: Manila is completely different from other countries I have visited. I went in the coolest time of the year, but nothing could have prepared me for the sticky humidity of Cubao, made so much more unbearable by the heavily polluted, exhaust-filled air.      Then there was the confusion of loud rock/pop music blaring out from the jeepneys, horns sounding constantly, vehicles coming at you from every direction, vendors weaving in and out of the traffic...

Missionary Spotlight – A day in the life ‘

A day in the life ‘   Jenny is a CCM social worker and is responsible for about 70 children from CCM’s Educational Assistance Programme. This helps to provide uniforms, shoes, books and an allowance for children from the slums so they can go to school.      During a typical day, Jenny will visit a slum area to see one of the families for whom CCM is providing support. This may involve squeezing down dark, wet alleyways and climbing steep, wobbly ladders into rooms made of corrugated iron and wood. The purpose of these visits is to talk with the family, follow up any absences...

Missionary Spotlight – Precious souls – Manila

Precious souls – Manila   Recently while on an early morning walk in Manila, I noticed an older, filthy, mentally-handicapped man surrounded by his meagre possessions. I felt compelled to speak with him – at least show some measure of kindness.   There was no response, just glazed, lifeless eyes, not even focusing on the one speaking to him. I decided to help him and gave him the delicious bread which I had purchased for breakfast. He said nothing as he took the bread and began to eat.      Years ago a noted Christian leader said, ‘All souls are precious, but not all souls are...
