‘These wheels are my “legs”!’

These were the words of Ivan, a village pastor and evangelist in north Moldova, as he looked proudly at the little motorcycle, purchased and presented to him by Slavic Gospel Association (UK) as part of its transport project ‘The Gospel on the Move’. What he means is that he can go further (and reach faster!) the many isolated village communities in his region, which are spiritually dark and needy. There are few large cities and towns in north Moldova, and the villages in which the majority of the population live are often difficult to reach. Some roads are little more than dirt tracks. Public transport...

Moldova (2)

Donald J. Morrison continues his report on gospel ministry to Romanians and Russians in Moldova’s rural countryside.. As we went around the village of Baurci Moldoveni with gospel materials, it was evident that the folk there had their own problems. Some of these, sadly, they have brought upon themselves. I found that alcohol addiction is as much widespread among the poor in rural Moldova, as it is among the affluent in urban Scotland. Broken cisterns Many of them find out, to their cost, the truth of the Scripture, ‘Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise’. A...

Moldova (1)

Donald J. Morrison reports on gospel ministry to Romanians and Russians in Moldova’s rural countryside. My recent 10-day missionary visit to Moldova, in Eastern Europe, was, as always, memorable. A craving to share the gospel with as many souls as possible was my primary reason for this trip, besides helping the poor and needy. At Chişinău I was met by my kind Moldovan Christian hosts, who drove me by car on a 3-hour journey to Cahul, a city in the south-west corner of the country, bordering Romania. This was my home for the next 10 days, and from where my kind-hearted hosts provided lavish hospitality....

Ministry in Moldova (2)

The following report (begun in ET, June 2015) was sent by Donald J. Morrison, a Free Church (Continuing) evangelist based in Inverness, following a recent 10-day missionary trip to Moldova in Eastern Europe. Nearly four years ago, one large Moldavian family was dealt a tragic blow, when the head of the home passed away, leaving a widowed wife (Ekaterina Giok, a devoted Christian) and eight small children. Their lives together were toppled upside down after Vasilli (48) lost his battle with cancer. His devastating loss brought much anguish and heartache to the family, although they knew that the death of a precious husband and devoted...

Ministry in Moldova

The following report was sent by Donald J. Morrison, a Free Church (Continuing) evangelist based in Inverness, following a recent 10-day missionary trip to Moldova in Eastern Europe. In the midst of continuing political and social trouble, Moldova remains a fertile mission field, where evangelical churches, albeit much in need of Reformed teaching, are continuing to grow and multiply. The main opposition to evangelical work comes from the Orthodox Church, which maintains strong ties with local government and strives to maintain its religious monopoly. Evangelical church planters often find this out to their cost, especially in traditionally Orthodox villages where they are can be hounded...

Moldova – 20 years on

‘Strangle the leadership and choke the churches!’ was a core element of Communist strategy to suppress and ultimately destroy evangelical churches in the Iron Curtain era. It was a plan which had deeply damaging consequences for the cause of the gospel, resulting in thousands of leaderless churches and countless communities throughout Eastern European countries without a glimmer of gospel light. Moldova was one such country. Patrick Johnstone recorded in his 1993 edition of Operation World that, ‘Training for pastors is the greatest need. There are 185 Baptist pastors, none of whom have received any formal training. Pray for the founding of a Bible school. SGA...

Moldova Ministries

Founding members of Moldova Ministries, Peter McFarlane and John Angus, recently retired as trustees after many years of fruitful service. In this period (post-perestroika) they saw the cause of Christ blossom, with churches being built and congregations being planted in many urban and rural situations. Moldova Ministries (MM) continues to support many social ministries among the young and elderly in Moldova, particularly through the recently built Bethany Church in Ciocana, on the outskirts of the capital city of Chisinau. The Republic of Moldova is in Eastern Europe, between Romania and Ukraine. Peter’s last visit to Moldova, in September, was his 78th in a period of...

Missionary Spotlight – The love of Christ in Moldova

The love of Christ in Moldova   The Moldovan word ‘to reveal’ has the sense of ‘uncover’. In recent days and months we have had a sense of the Lord ‘uncovering’ wonderful plans that he has had from all eternity for the people with whom we are working.   We are a very small group of women with no influence and few resources of our own. In the projects outlined below, the Lord has again and again caused us to see that we are totally dependent on him to work, often in seemingly impossible situations.      It would be our testimony that we have seen...
