Gospel initiative in Wakefield

Grace Church Wakefield (www.gracechurchwakefield.org.uk) is an initiative, sponsored by Dewsbury Evangelical Church (www.dewsbury-church.org.uk), to establish a gospel church in Wakefield. Wakefield is a busy city in West Yorkshire of at least 77,500, though this number probably increases to 110,000 when including near-neighbour areas. Wakefield has long been a gospel black spot, a city notable for its lack of thriving evangelical witness. In 2014, Dewsbury Evangelical Church, six miles from Wakefield, set apart a small team of seven people to pioneer a new gospel ministry there. We trialled Sunday afternoon meetings in a local cafe space and some low-key events to get to know people. Since...

Gideons at Exeter University

We read in Judges 6-7 that God gave Gideon a vital task to fulfil with only a tiny number of men. So it was that, at the end of October 2016, an even tinier number of Gideons from local branches undertook the task of witnessing to the students of Exeter University and offering them a free copy of the Word of God. The outreach is organised each year with the help of the university chaplaincy and the Evangelical Christian Union. We are able to book a stand in the Forum, a large building at the university which houses a library, shop, restaurants and bar. There...

Keep calm and think biblically!

Several times recently I have been asked by concerned Christians questions along the lines of, ‘Will Muslims take over in the UK/the West?’ or, ‘How should we respond to the violence of Islamic State or the influx of refugees?’ My precise answer depends upon the circumstances, but is usually along the lines of, ‘Keep calm and think biblically!’ Objective thinking What do I mean? There is a danger that we allow our thinking to be manipulated by the secular media or the agenda of people who want to scare us into supporting their particular cause. So here are some suggestions for a calm and biblical...

Stretched to the limit, but giving God all the glory!

I have to admit that when I first signed up to do Weymouth beach mission, it wasn’t all about serving God and sharing the gospel. I did want to do those things but there were other reasons too! My brother-in-law and sister had been encouraging me to come for some time and I was keen to spend some time with them. So you could say I wasn’t the best prepared for what I was about to do. I soon realised that when I arrived. On Sunday afternoon the training began and I think it was then that the full impact of what beach mission was...

Testimonies at Sidmouth

Testimonies at Sidmouth   From 8-14 April, a series of Parkinson-style interviews took place at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Sidmouth. Coming from the same county as the real Michael Parkinson, Yorkshireman and evangelist Roger Carswell interviewed a variety of inspirational Christians.       The first was Professor Stuart Burgess, head of engineering design at Bristol University, who has written extensively on the evidence for creation and a creator.       The interview was a revelation of how God has worked in Stuart’s life, leading him from a dysfunctional family background and poor academic achievement at school to be one of the country’s top design engineers.       Musicians Gus...

SixtyEightFive

SixtyEightFive Ian Williamson was 28 years old and life made no sense to him. He was a nightclub bouncer with a £200-a-week cocaine habit; into sex, violence, alcohol and self-harm. Now, ten years later, he runs an inspiring Christian ministry to men and young people from troubled backgrounds in South Bank, a suburb of Middlesbrough in the north east of England. Matthew Evans asked Ian about his work, and how he got to where he is today, from where he was back then. Ian, tell us about your conversion My life was such a mess; I was suicidal. I wanted to love and be loved,...

Reaching east in West London

Reaching east in West London Cranford, in the London Borough of Hounslow, lies under the flight path of the world’s busiest airport.     Cranford Baptist Church is about 1,800m from the end of the northern runway of Heathrow Airport, and aircraft often pass overhead. When the church was founded in the 1930s, Heathrow was a much quieter place than it is today, and Cranford had a very different local population.     Today, there is great social, economic and ethnic diversity in Cranford and ministering to the predominantly Asian population there is Robin Asgher, who is himself originally from Pakistan.     Robin’s wife, Muno, is from...

Sowing the seed

Sowing the seed   It is part of the Great Commission that evangelical churches should reach out to their neighbourhoods, regularly and prayerfully, and use the opportunities given.      Perhaps the greatest opportunity, apart from regular visitation, is at Christmas time. For the past three years, Aycliffe Evangelical Church in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, has used the December Evangelical Times in its Christmas outreach, delivering a copy to each of 1,800 homes in the community around the church.   ‘Why ET?’   The first reason is that increasingly, over the last few years, ET has made its Christmas issue a very special one, geared to...
