Taliban fighters have tightened their grip on Afghanistan and have publicly told Christians to convert, leave, or be killed.
The Taliban is also forcing women and girls in captured territories to ‘marry’ their fighters.
The Islamist group is also carrying out reprisals on anyone who helped British and American forces over the past two decades.
‘Afghan Christians are at huge risk,’ a spokesperson for Barnabas Fund said.
‘Taliban fighters are expanding their area of control, especially in rural areas, and re-imposing their ultra-strict form of sharia as they go.
‘By the end of August the last Americans will have gone, but in mid-July the Taliban already claimed to control 85% of the country.
‘What is certain is that Afghan Christians, as converts from Islam, will be even more vulnerable under Taliban rule than under the Afghan government.
‘The Taliban has publicly announced that Christians must convert, leave, or be killed.’
Afghanistan is ranked number two on the Open Doors world watch list for its brutal persecution of Christian believers.
According to Open Doors: ‘It’s very hard to know precisely how many Christians there are in Afghanistan, because they must keep their faith completely secret.’
The group added, ‘Open Doors stands with the small community of believers inside Afghanistan and we’re calling for urgent prayer on their behalf.
‘With the ongoing effects of civil war, the expansion of extremism, food shortages and the raging pandemic, Afghanistan needs urgent prayer from the global church right now more than ever.
‘Many of these believers have been forced to flee and leave everything they own to find safety in an already unstable and dangerous situation.
‘Join us in prayer today for our brothers and sisters caught in the crossfire in Afghanistan.’
A secret Afghan believer said, ‘How we survive daily only God knows. He knows because he has been kind to dwell with us. But we are tired of all the death around us.’
