Andy Pitt inducted in Emmanuel Evangelical Church, Newport

February 2021 | by Gareth James

The members of Emmanuel Evangelical Church, Newport, give thanks and praise to God for calling Revd Andy Pitt to the pastorate of the church.

Andy had both preached and led prayer meetings on several occasions both before and during recent lockdowns. These occurred in the church building and via Zoom and YouTube.

A special members’ meeting was held over Zoom in September 2020, in which the church voted to call Andy as pastor.

Andy is originally from Stroud and has spent the last 18 years of his life serving as pastor of Park Baptist Church in Merthyr Tydfil.

He succeeds Revd Bernard Lewis (who pastored the church faithfully from 2010 and retired in October 2020). Pastor Bernard’s final service took place on the Sunday before the ‘firebreak lockdown’ and was followed by a farewell meeting in which Ian Davies presented gifts to Bernard and his wife Linda, thanking them on behalf of the church.

A video of the church families singing a farewell song was also played and Pastor Bernard gave a warm retirement speech.

Andy commenced his new role on 9 November and led his first services as pastor on 15 November.

A short act of induction led by church secretary Ian Davies took place at the beginning of the morning service. This service was the first after the ‘firebreak lockdown’ in Wales. It was good to have a small, socially-distanced congregation gathered there as well as the rest of the church watching on YouTube. Andy’s wife Viv was also welcomed into membership at this service.

Andy preached a stirring sermon from Romans 1, focusing on the gospel’s power to save and grant deliverance from guilt’s burden – a redemption available to all who repent and believe the good news.
