Assisted suicide – MSPs in favour of Life Assistance (Scotland) Bill

March 2010

Leading politicians in Scotland have come out in favour of the proposed Life Assistance (Scotland) Bill, which aims to provide legal protection for those who enable suicides.

Margo MacDonald, MSP, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, told reporters at a press briefing that public opinion and conscience have played a key part in making politicians ‘a bit scared’ of voting in favour of allowing legal protection for those who help their loved ones to die.

Mrs MacDonald said that she did not want anyone else to make the decision to die for her, but that she wanted to make it herself and ‘know it is legal for someone else to help me’. Her comments have added fuel to the fire already raging over whether laws on assisted suicide should be relaxed.
