Challenge your comfort zone

March 2015 | by Kasey Carter

Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone for God? Many of us are content in our spiritual lives and don’t welcome change or disruption in our daily routines. Perhaps feelings of anxiety, discomfort and lack of confidence in ourselves inhibit us from stepping out of our comfort zones?

Have you ever felt God’s nudge to take a certain course of action? If God puts forth a challenge to us, we should relinquish our stubbornness and fear, without hesitation, and tackle his request.

Obedience may seem like a risky undertaking. However, being an avid listener and heeding God’s requests will build spiritual knowledge and maturity.

Our God is a strategic mastermind. We must embrace our discomfort, when he meticulously places us in various situations out of our ‘comfort zone’, in order, for example, to bring others to the Lord Jesus. Each of us has a spiritual gift and God will utilise that gift as a lure to entice others to notice his magnificent glory.

Perhaps you were nervous, or even petrified, on the first day of school? Did you avoid the difficult teachers who loved setting lengthy assignments; and were any of your best friends in your classes? The unknown is not always going to be comfortable, or easy to accept.

God’s calling

However, God calls on each of us to be obedient and trust in him in unfamiliar circumstances. When we take this leap of faith, many of us quickly notice how vulnerable and dependent we are that God should see us through these sticky situations.

Leaving our comfort zone is not only a necessary part of education, but also an essential part of spiritual vitality.

Unfortunately, many spiritual lives are stuck in the status quo category. They have a sense of normalcy that we don’t want to disrupt. But, if we would please God, we should never be completely satisfied with ourselves in our walk and witness for him. For, if we are complacent and not willing to accept the challenges that lie ahead, our spiritual lives suffer.

We should take comfort in knowing that when we are guided out of our comfort zones, we are never acting alone. Why are blinkers used in horse racing? They are used to help the horses focus straight ahead of them and limit side distractions. Consequently, these devices facilitate ‘seeing’ the finish line.

In the same way, God wants us to have an unwavering focus and relentless desire to step out of our comfort zones, knowing that he will provide the necessary support system.

Aspire to listen to God’s calling and simply be obedient when given directions. ‘You have declared this day that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in obedience to him, that you will keep his decrees, commands and laws — that you will listen to him’ (Deuteronomy 26:17).
