The United Reformed Church (URC) in the UK has joined Quakers and Unitarians to take advantage of new legislation to allow gay and lesbian couples to celebrate civic registration in their chapels.
Counsellor Steve Radford, president of the Liberal Party, said, ‘We are pleased, as we wrote during the formal consultation, as a political party in favour of allowing faith communities to carry out civic registration services should they wish.
‘While the Church of England has declined to authorise any of its churches to carry out such services, the URC, Quakers and Unitarians have given authority’.
In July, the Episcopal Church became the biggest church in the US to approve a provisional rite for blessing gay unions after its House of Deputies gave its final approval.
