Induction – 220 years of gospel witness

March 2017

On 28 January 2017, Bethlehem Chapel in Richmond, Surrey, celebrated 220 years of God’s faithfulness, and the public recognition of their new pastor, Robert Goodgame.

The service was attended by around 80 people, who shared in this time of celebration.

The service started with a call to worship from Hebrews 10:16-22, followed by a reading from 1 John 5:1-7. The pastor gave a brief history of the chapel. The work was started by a Mr John Chapman in 1797, and was opened by Rev. William Huntington. The chapel is believed to be the oldest independent free church in West London still being used as a place of worship. Some of the challenges and blessings over those 220 years were also shared.

A thanksgiving prayer followed, led by previous pastor Peter Robbings. Rt Rev. Dominic Stockford of Christ Church Teddington preached on Jeremiah 20:9, calling for God’s ministers and people to have the fire of God’s Word burning in them, in order to live a life dedicated to following Jesus regardless of the cost.

Rev. Gwynne Evans then prayed for the fellowship that meets at the chapel and for the Lord’s hand to be upon the minister and the gospel witness of the church. The service was closed in prayer by Mr Robert Goodgame. After the service, refreshments were served and friendships made over a time of fellowship, with a pictorial history of the chapel playing in the background.

We again thank our triune God for his faithfulness and equipping for the ministry, and pray that he would gain all of the glory for his continuing work at Bethlehem Chapel. Please pray with us for God to bless the work here to the glory of Christ Jesus.

Robert Goodgame is married to Charlotte and has two children, Karis and Sophia. Robert is currently studying with the FIEC’s Christian Ministry Training Course. The fellowship meets each Sunday at 11.00am and each Thursday at 8.00pm. (Further details from
