Mission – Esk Valley church plant

May 2018

In 2016 St Columba’s Free Church in Edinburgh officially launched the Esk Valley church plant. Nearly two years on, it has grown from the initial four-person group that established it.

Under the leading of St Columba’s, Rev. Tom Muir and his family moved to the area to help initiate the plant. Now there is a congregation of up to 60 people meeting for worship on Sundays in the National Mining Museum, Newtongrange.

Mr Muir said, ‘We are putting a lot of focus on discipleship, trying to make sure everyone in the church has access to a time during the week when they can meet in a small group, or one-to-one for fellowship and growth in the gospel’. According to the Free Church of Scotland website, there are a number of families associated with the congregation coming back to church.

Mr Muir added, ‘We are seeking to walk alongside these people for however long it takes for them to come to see Jesus as Lord.

‘Practically, we’re beginning to look into a longer-term venue. Our current rented one has some limitations, though it is character-full; and we really want to put roots down in the community and start to explore new ways to impact this region’.
