Major General RJ Thomson CBE DSO has become the new president of the Soldiers’ and Airmens’ Scripture Readers Association. He succeeds General the Lord Dannatt GCB CBE MC DL, who after 20 years as president now becomes President Emeritus of the Association.
SASRA’s work to provide Christian ministry to British Army and RAF personnel stretches back to the 19th century. Ex-servicemen and women are employed by SASRA to serve in various barracks and garrisons throughout the UK.
Major General Thomson is currently serving as Administrator of the Sovereign Base Areas and Commander of British Forces, Cyprus.
General Thomson joined the Royal Green Jackets in 1989 after graduation from Magdalen College, Cambridge. He has been on active service in Germany, Norway, Canada, Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan.
He then commanded 2 RIFLES, deploying to Kosovo (2008) and Afghanistan (2009). Following professional studies in France, General Thomson was appointed Defence Attaché in Paris in 2017.
He is married to Hils, and they have five children.
On taking up the role, General Thomson requested prayer that the Lord would uphold his family during the upheaval of the change, and that he himself would have wisdom and effectiveness in his new position at SASRA.
