Abortion adverts

Pleas for a ban on adverts promoting abortion have been presented en masse to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). This follows reports in June that YouTube banned a graphic NHS advert, aimed at teenagers, which promoted the use of contraception.

Following a wide-scale consultation by the ASA’s broadcasting arm – the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice – the Christian Institute and other religious groups have called for a moratorium on pre-watershed abortion and contraception advertising.

The Christian Institute’s statement said that proposals for advertising abortion services and condoms before 9.00pm ‘risked exposing children to inappropriate material’.
