New pastor for Holywell

The weather outside was frightful, but inside Holywell Free Church, Loughborough, it was delightful as 250 folk gathered on 9 January to witness the induction of Joseph Pettitt.

Attendees came from Hayes Town Chapel and Alexandra Road Congregational Church, Hemel Hempstead – churches where Joseph had previously served – to join members and friends from local churches.

His appointment followed an inter-regnum of more than three years, following the retirement of Bruce Powell in October 2006, after fifteen faithful years as minister of Holywell.

Those present heard a short history of the call from the church’s point of view and Joseph’s response. Ian Densham, minister of Alexandra Road, where Joseph had been a deacon before attending London Theological Seminary (LTS), gave the charges to Joseph and the membership of Holywell. This was followed by prayer from Gwynne Evans, minister of Hayes, where Joseph served as assistant minister for two years.

David Green, Vice Principal of LTS, preached from Mark 1, dwelling on verses 35-39. Despite the busyness of his daily life, the Lord Jesus Christ’s priorities were those of preaching and prayer. David Green commended these as priorities for Joseph’s ministry and the church in its support of that ministry.

The service closed with the hymn, ‘Lord, from whom all blessings flow, perfecting the church below’ and a prayer by Rev. Powell. The church rejoices at having a settled ministry once again and is grateful to all who have helped with preaching, prayer and encouragement during the past three years.

Our prayer now is that we might know much blessing in the years to come, reaping a harvest around the church and among students on the neighbouring university campus.
