Thornton Heath EC

When the Lord’s work expands beyond the walls of the church hall and forces the need for more space, what can you do? Do a Nehemiah!

Members of Thornton Heath Evangelical Church (THEC) have agreed to press ahead with a complete rebuild and renovation of the halls and church after years of blessing have made the old building insufficient for the work.

Situated near the old ‘pond’ at Thornton Heath, what began as a small mission in the old tin shack on the corner of London Road and Malvern Road, has now stood on the same spot for more than 100 years.

Thanks to the blessing of God, the church is now in contact with 80-100 children through its weekly groups and outreach, such as under-fives, Impact and junior church; and it holds well-attended ladies’ conferences and special dinners. Most of the children who come are not from Christian homes.

The problem now is that the rooms are no longer fit for purpose, with such extensive repair work needed that the church has decided to tear down the old buildings and build new facilities, as well as renovating the worship area to cater for increasing numbers coming into the congregation.

The Lord’s provision has given the church the ownership of the house next door to allow meetings to carry on each week while the rebuild goes ahead. The members and friends of Thornton Heath are prayerfully considering monetary pledges to help raise the roof on the massive project.

According to the architect, who is also a Christian, the rebuilding work will take nine months and the church waits eagerly to see where God will take the fellowship in its exciting future.
