North Korea

April 2014

An Australian missionary in his 70s has been released by North Korean officials after signing a declaration of guilt.

According to reports from international advocacy group Barnabas Fund, John Short, who lives in China, was arrested in February this year for distributing Christian leaflets at a Buddhist temple.

He was freed on 3 March after a two-week ordeal, and was reunited with his wife, Karen. According to Barnabas Fund, the missionary was only released after he signed a statement begging forgiveness from North Korea and admitting crimes against the state.

The North Korean official line is that the state acted generously towards Mr Short, in light of his age, despite Mr Short admitting to an earlier ‘offence’ of handing out leaflets during a visit in 2012.
