Northumberland Bible convention attracts 200

October 2019 | by George Curry

In July, the small Northumbrian village of Longframlington swelled in size as some 200 people from across the northeast and Scotland gathered for the 72nd Bible Convention. Sponsored by Longhorsley Mission Free Church, the three-day annual gathering proved to be a time of sound teaching and warm fellowship.

In several messages from John 13 and 14, Andrew Lucas (Omagh Evangelical Presbyterian Church) drew out many doctrinal truths and practical lessons. He referenced the humble service of Jesus in washing the disciples’ feet.

He also spoke of the ‘rest’ believers enjoy in the Lord and how the Saviour has gone ahead to prepare a place for believers. In his third sermon, Andrew encouraged God’s people to remember the great Helper: the promised Holy Spirit who is always with them.

Robert Murdock, Principal of the Faith Mission Bible College in Edinburgh, also spoke at the conference. He expounded 1 Corinthians 13 and also spoke on a particular verse which has afforded him constant encouragement: Isaiah 40:11 – ‘He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young’.

Robert concluded the weekend by exploring the church of Antioch in Acts 11, noting its dynamic leadership and outward focus.

Attendees departed both uplifted and encouraged. The prayer of the organisers is that another conference will be held over the first weekend of July 2020, when the preachers will be Rupert Bentley-Taylor (Bath) and David Campbell (Preston).
