In September Revd Thomas Buchanan was ordained by the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing) and inducted to the pastoral charge of the Brora congregation near Golspie in the far North East of Scotland.
The event was conducted at Tarbat FCS(C) in Portmahomack. Attendance in person was limited to 50, but many more connected to the service via live streaming.
Revd John W. Keddie, former Moderator of the FCS(C) General Assembly and retired Principal of the Free Church Seminary, spoke from Colossians 1:28 on Paul’s desire to preach Christ and ‘present every man perfect in Christ Jesus’. He emphasised the pre-eminence of Christ in the life and ministry of the church.
Revd Keddie also addressed the new minister, who confirmed his commitment to uphold the teachings of the Westminster Confession of Faith and other tenets of Presbyterian government, worship and practice. Other Presbytery ministers then came forward and laid hands on Revd Buchanan as he was committed to God’s care in prayer.
A personal word of exhortation was given directly to Revd Buchanan by the Moderator, using Paul’s counsel to his protégé in 1 Timothy 6.
‘You are Christ’s man,’ Revd Keddie said, ‘under his charge and to fight spiritually for him and to seek the good of souls always.’
Revd Buchanan hails from Northern Ireland and recently completed his theological training at the FCS(C) seminary in Inverness. He was previously at the Ballyclare and Doagh congregation.
The move to Brora was not easy. Revd Buchanan’s daughter Lydia had to undergo hospital treatment earlier in the year and lockdown restrictions also complicated the relocation to Brora. However, the family of six had completed the move by July.
A video recording of the service is on Tarbat FCS(C)’s YouTube channel.
